We keep our exact routes for the biking element a secret for a reason. Before creating this expedition, we spent countless hours exploring Sri Lanka on two wheels, taking wrong turns, no directions or maps, riding roads simply to see where they led. Along the way, we discovered incredible locations that never make it into guidebooks and roads that tourists would never think to take.
Rather than following a route that's been copied and pasted from other tours, we've built this journey from our own adventures exploring the island. Every road, stop, activity, food and detour has earned its place on the expedition because it's something we genuinely loved ourselves.
We want every person on our expedition to experience the same sense of discovery that made us fall in love with these roads in the first place, so while we'll tell you what to expect from the expedition overall, some surprises are best left for the journey itself.
SURF SPOTS
Sri Lanka’s south coast has something for every level, from soft beach breaks perfect for beginners to faster reef and point breaks for more experienced surfers.
Every stop along the journey offers something different, with a mix of mellow bays and consistent right-hand waves, allowing beginners to build confidence while more advanced surfers find quality waves nearby.
No matter your level, there’s always a wave for you.
AHANGAMA:
A mix of reef breaks with mainly right-hand waves, offering long, playful rides on the better days. Some spots can also offer short left sections depending on the swell direction.
This is where we start and finish the tour.
WELIGAMA:
A large sandy bay with a beach break (no fixed left or right). Waves roll in both directions depending on sandbanks, but it’s mainly soft, reforming whitewater and gentle waves.
HIRIKETIYA:
Small horseshoe-shaped bay with a reef break that mainly offers fun right-hand waves, along with occasional shorter lefts depending on the swell. It’s a consistent spot that works well for beginners progressing into greener waves, while still giving more experienced surfers something fun when conditions pick up.
DICKWELLA:
A mixed zone with several breaks nearby, offering both reef and beach breaks. You’ll find mostly right-hand waves, but there are also lefts depending on which peak you surf. Very flexible spot with options for all levels.
UNAKURUWA:
A more exposed reef setup with mainly clean right-hand point-style waves. On bigger swells, it can offer longer, more powerful rides. Some smaller left sections depending on conditions.
This location is a hidden gem & one of our personal favourites.
MIRISSA:
A beach break with some reef influence, producing mostly right-hand waves with occasional lefts. The waves are shorter and a bit punchier than Weligama, making it good for progression.
We land at this location on a Saturday, which gives you the perfect opportunity to get involved with the night life!
HISTORY & CULTURE
Every place featured on this expedition is somewhere we've personally discovered and genuinely enjoyed ourselves. On our countless days exploring Sri Lanka with no maps, no final destination, taking detours down unknown roads, following recommendations from locals, and stopping at places simply because they looked interesting.
Not everything we visited made it into the expedition. We came across plenty of attractions, landmarks, and experiences along the way, but the places included here are the ones that stayed with us long after we left. They're the places we return to ourselves and the ones we're excited to share with others!
Whilst there are some well known places included, this isn't a just collection of popular tourist stops. It's a selection of places that became part of our own off the beaten track adventures, and we believe they show a side of Sri Lanka that a majority of visitors never get to experience!
We share a few glimpses of what to expect at these places, but they are best discovered and seen in person, so we keep as much of it as a surprise as we can!
Tea is such a huge part of Sri Lankan culture that we felt it had to be included in the expedition. While most of Sri Lanka's famous tea plantations are found high in the cooler central mountains, this estate offers a rare opportunity to experience tea growing much closer to the southern coastline, making it a unique stop on our journey through the island.
We'll spend time exploring the estate grounds, learning how tea is grown alongside other plants and spices found throughout the plantation. You'll get to walk through the fields, see the tea-making process inside the factory, and gain a real appreciation for the work that goes into every cup.
One of our favourite parts of the visit is when you can sit overlooking the estate with a cup of tea and a slice of cake, taking in the surroundings. You'll also have the opportunity at the end of the tour to sample the expansive range of teas produced on the estate. This tour is a fascinating insight into a tradition that has helped shape Sri Lanka for generations.
TEA PLANTATION
The most important cultural stop takes us to the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, a place that offers a fascinating glimpse into Sri Lanka's history, traditions, and way of life. Named after Martin Wickramasinghe, one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated writers, the museum is set within his ancestral home and beautifully preserved grounds.
What we love most about this stop is that it goes far beyond a typical museum visit. As you explore the exhibits, you'll discover how everyday life looked for generations of Sri Lankans, from traditional farming and fishing practices to ancient crafts, religious customs, folk art, masks, musical instruments, and tools that helped shape rural communities across the island.
The grounds themselves are peaceful and full of character, with tropical gardens, restored buildings, and the original family home where Wickramasinghe grew up. Walking through the museum provides a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka's heritage and offers a fascinating contrast to the modern island you'll experience throughout the rest of the expedition.
It's one of those places that helps bring Sri Lanka's story to life, and a stop we felt was too special not to share.
HISTORY MUSEUM
One of our favourite discoveries in Sri Lanka is a hidden temple unlike any other we've visited on the island. Set high above the surrounding landscape, the journey begins with a climb up the hillside, following a path lined with impressive statues that lead you towards the summit.
As you make your way upwards, the views continue to open up, with each step revealing more of the incredible scenery below. Reaching the top is a rewarding moment, where you're met with uninterrupted views stretching for miles across Sri Lanka's countryside.
This is exactly the kind of place we love finding. A location away from the tourist trail, where the journey to get there is just as memorable as the destination itself.

THE WILDLIFE
One of the things we love most about exploring Sri Lanka is the incredible wildlife that shares the journey with us. As we venture through the island's coastlines, jungles, and countryside, you'll encounter a variety of animals that makes the adventure feel that touch more special.

“What about Elephants?!”
Although Sri Lanka is notorious for its wild elephants, they aren't commonly found in the areas we explore during the expedition. Most elephant populations are found further east.
While it's unlikely we'll encounter them on our route, nature has a way of surprising you from time to time, so we can never say never!
